Theme DescriptionWhen the first cattle arrived in the Hawaiian Islands in 1793 as a gift for King Kamehameha I, they soon became an issue as the livestock overtook the countryside. Trying to alleviate the problem, King Kamehameha III integrated Mexican vaquero from California to assist and bring skills to Hawaiians to subdue the wild cattle. The culture of cowboys took shape, and the rich tradition is still part of Hawaii today.
